Food is essential for good health and survival. We require food to grow, reproduce and maintain good health . With out food, our body can not stay warm , build re repair tissues or maintain a heartbeat. Eating the right foods can help is to avoid certain diseases or recover faster when illness occurs. Useful chemical substances derived from food by the body are called nutrients. Nutrients are classified as carbohydrates, proteins, fats , vitamins, minerals and water.
Introduction to malnutrition
A lack of healthy foods in the diet or an excessive intake of unhealthy food which leads to physical harm is known as malnutrition. Malnutrition is caused by a deficiency or excess of one or more essential nutrients in the diet. malnutrition leads to different health problems, such as weight loss, slow physical and mental growth, week resistance to infections etc. children suffer from the effect of malnutrition more quickly than adults. The children who are suffering from malnutrition develop a condition called protein energy malnutrition (PEM) The two most common diseases of protein- energy malnutrition (PEM) are marasumus and kwashiorkor .
